QUESTION NO. P090303-8:
Panasonic PV9661-K VCR. I removed a jammed tape, since then the
gear controlling the tape loading/unloading mechanism (with special
grooves beneath it) gets out of place, fixed each time (had to take the
tape assembly out of place). Head got dirty (auto-head-cleaning
roller got too dirty, removed). Cotton swaps (with
alcohol) after several times cleaning damaged the video heads (broke the
tiny heads). Replaced the video head upper cylinder. Now
there is no audio, no picture, no counter at all: only blue screen
during all regular playback speeds (sp, lp, slp/ep).
But can only get crisp clear picture in FastForward play or Fast Rewind
Play. Counter is steady at 00:00 regardless of mode (rewind, fast
fwd, play, fast fwd play, fast bkwd play). Afraid to clean the new
head (in case it got dirty on installation). New
auto-cleaning roller is backordered for 4-6 weeks (if in stock in
Japan!). (previously cleaned the encoding disk/head below the
mechanical assembly). I don't think it is the connectors between
the board and the mechanical assembly, (specially that only the picture
does appear with fast play). What could lead to the video thinking
that there is no recording (no timing)? and never show picture/audio or
run the counter?
|
|
I solved it. It is the
Audio/Control head. It can be either dirty, or (as it was in
my case) disconnected. Some of the wires were damaged (cut)
while removing the load/unload motor in several occasions to fix the
large white load/unload control gear. It is now working fine
after re-welding the six-wire cable from both sides.

| QUESTION NO. P51303-4: RCA VPT 290 VCR FCC AHA967005. IC 851 is bad and Q852 (N20V stamped on it) seems to show a dead short. This part looks as if it is a diode, since it only has two leads out of it. I cannot cross it to anything. |
| N20 is an 800ma circuit protector or silicone fuse, whatever you like to call it. |
| QUESTION NO. P42503-10: Panasonic NV-J35 VCR turns on and off. FF and REV is o'k. Problems appear while in playback/rec mode. Counter counts tape properly. Audio is distorted (speed jitter). No video during playback (noisy screen with two vertical "bands"). Capstain motor works noisy (peaks in capstain motor current diagrams). Digital tracking control blinks occasionally. Head rotates. VCR is PAL/SECAM with NTSC playback version. Malfunction started with power supply malfunction (starting capacitor leak of capacity). All power supply DC voltages are within limits. |
| Replace all the capacitors in the supply except the large mains filter. You are describing a faulty C1132 (330uF10) but others will be faulty. |

| QUESTION NO. P40703-2: RCA VR678 VCR (Toshiba) is dead, no display. Power supply is not starting. Checked components in power supply but all check ok. |
| Most times in these models the main rectifier diodes in the power supply will measure good with a meter on diode check, but if you plug the unit in and check for DC coming out of the diodes there is none. They fail under load. The RCA part # of the diodes is 201066, but test the diodes accordingly before replacing them.. |

QUESTION NO. P31003-8:
Panasonic AG-1960 VCR plays OK for a minute or two, then gets snow in
the picture every few seconds & clears up, getting progressively
worse. Cleaned video & A/C heads, backtension & P2/P3 post
adjustments have no effect.
|
|
It seems that your capstan motor
is bad or related. A sure sign is if the audio fluctuates.
You could take capstan apart and clean & lub, run in ff with a dummy
tape. This is not necessarily a permanent fix.
|
| QUESTION NO. P40303-5: Hitachi VT-F860E VCR is dead. Replaced shorted zener D9 in PSU. VCR starts but will not go out of standby. After a while D9 shorts again. |
| Replace C12,C13 and C16,C17. They usually get dry and results in a shorted OVP diode D9. |
|
QUESTION NO. P32003-5:
Toshiba m-64 VCR any tape is played back with SP speed - i.e. tape speed
is not detected properly. Intermittent loss of tracking - approx.
every 5 seconds. Have already fixed "usual" problem with
dying power module - leaking capacitors.
|
| What you are describing is a dirty or faulty Audio control head. Give it a good clean, if that does not work, replace it. |
| QUESTION NO. P21303-3: JVC hr-s9700 VCR, when the tape passes through the pinch roller it comes out in a small angle causing the tape to fold against the guide arm. Pinch roller, idler, capstan motor, guide arm, pole base have all been replaced but with no result. Also tried another head but no results. I have several vcrs with the same problem. VCR was sent to jvc twice but with no results. |
|
This should be an easy fault to
find, your problem is excess tape drag which causes the tape to be
pulled down and so getting creased. You now have to find out
where, Have had the back tension band become contaminated. Old Nationals
with the heads dull (polish with silvo) or the takeup drive being
excessive. Just use a small screwdriver and check the tape tension at
all possible places by pushing on it. Suggest you get the
"feel" with a working model first.

QUESTION NO. P12703-2: JVC
HR-D620U VCR, in play back it looks as if it is going twice the
speed. I noticed the play button os labeled "PLAY/X2".
|
|
Check your capstan FG pulse, it
comes from hall element. This is the reference signal for capstan
speed servo control, that controls the speed. Also, check for the CTL
PULSE, for this one controls the capstan phase servo control.

| QUESTION NO. P112102-3: Zenith VR-2220 VCR. I need the Zenith part number for the video heads. |
|
Found Zenith part number 273 on http://www.fixer.com/products/video-heads/zen/.
|
| QUESTION NO. P121802-8: Panasonic lPV-4451-K VCR. The tape got stuck in the customer's house, once the customer got the tape out, the VCR would partially load the tape but a loud click would be heard then it would eject the tape. I examined the cam gear (Panasonic # VDGS0416, RCA # 225117) and the other gears but found no broken teeth or foreign objects, I cleaned the mode switch. |
|
Check two things: 1.
Cassette housing must be mounted straight & not racked in any way.
Also check sides of housing for anything out of position. 2..
Check vcr mechanism is in proper mechanical time when cassette is
unloaded (generally line up all the HOLES on GEARS with HOLES IN
CHASSIS). If no holes, gears will have arrows which must align
with each other.
|
| QUESTION NO. P111902-1: Hitachi VT-F391AW HiFi VCR plays for about an hour, then the capstan motor slows down and stops. The unit of course shuts down immediately. Same symptoms using a test jig or actual videotape. I replaced the mode-select switch, but it still has the same symptoms. |
|
Your problem is the capstan motor
itself. I have changed many of them over the past several years.
|
| QUESTION NO. P112102-9: JVC HR-VP782U VCR took a power spike blew fuse, replaced fuse, unit still won't power up. Checked all diodes and trans. |
| Unplug the loads on the power supply. Measure all the voltage on the power output connector. You could need to put a dummy load on a few pins if the power supply is a switching type. No need if it is a linear type. If power supply is bad, test every component on it. If it is good, the defect is on the load. Could be anything. Remember that CMOS chips are sensitive to overvoltage spikes. |
| QUESTION NO. P112602-9: GE VG2050 VCR tries to play the tape then ejects. A search of this site it is looking like possible the mode switch but I cannot find such a switch on this board. |
| The mode switch is not necessarily located directly on the PCB, it is often screwed to the tape deck chassis. It can be hidden by gears or arms. Look for a switch that has multiple position and is activated by any mechanical parts that is related to cassette/tape loading. You can try to clean this switch instead of replacing it. |
| QUESTION NO. P91702-7: JVC HR-S5400U VCR. The front display flashes - AUTO and the unit will not accept a tape. |
| Clean mode switch. |
| QUESTION NO. P101102-5: JVC hrs10000u VCR, capstain motor at cold start unit runs fine after 20 min. Changes speed sound & picture drag. |
| Clean/lube capstan motor. |
| QUESTION NO. P101102-10: Sony SLV-X710 VCR, audio is good, picture is good except for bottom potion of picture, all wavy lines on bottom of screen, video return was faulty. Fixed that by cleaning heads, tracking seems Ok. How do I make a full picture visible? |
| Clean/lube the tension guide post, the one that moves the film towards the A/C head. |
| QUESTION NO. P73002-9: Hitachi VT-F540A VCR, when a tape is inserted, the machine will not recognize assigned tape speeds on a Studio produced tape. Seems to be "fixed" in "SP", and bad at that. Sort of recognizes speeds in REC. mode, but PB is bad. Picked up a parts machine, that has power but "no" Capstan movement at all. Are the Capstan Motors in these particular models, known to fail? I suspected fixed 12 volt reg. on main circuit board, but checked out fine. Motor driver, I.C.#SA2006A, on Capstan board, seems to run unusually hot. Fellow Tech suggested bad voltage reg. in PS assy. |
| Try replacing the capstan motor bearings. |
| QUESTION NO. P82102-9: National VCR NV-G33 had a power supply problem. I replaced inductor L1, rectifier diode D4, regulator Q1 (D1806E) and R3 (2.2ohms) on power chassis VEP01310. Power problem has been rectified. The set can rewind and fast forward but can not play. |
| Your question is not quite complete as we do not know if the heads spin. Your failure could have been caused by the drum motor failing. A tip though, check the display. If it dims when selecting play, electrolytics in the supply are the likely cause. |
| QUESTION NO. P80802-5: National VCR NV-300 VCR was dead, I replaced 3x D1273 transistors in power supply, resoldered all cold joints. Now the tape runs but very fast, no picture only lines can be seen on screen and distorted sound due to high speed. |
| There are dried out electrolytics in the power supply and another lot in the servo's. If this is a fun job good luck if you wish to repair for profit or to create a viable unit, good heavens. |
| QUESTION NO. P80502-3: Magnavox RS2568 C602 VCR, chassis 25Y105-00AA, need values of burned R432 and R308. |
| R432 is a 1K, 1/2 watt. Also check R431 which is a 47 ohm, 1/2 watt. Check capacitor C431 which is usually either a 1mfd or a 3.3mfd. Also replace IC410 in case it is damaged. Make sure you check for bad solder connections all over the main chassis, especially on the horizontal driver transformer. And of course check the horizontal output transistor. I could not find R308. |
| QUESTION NO. P71102-6: JVC HR-J610U VCR has bad power supply. Need the value of zeners D862, D864 and R852 at power supply. |
| www.jvcservice.com then click on "non account members". |
| QUESTION NO. P70302-8: JVC HR-S3910U VCR had a lightning strike. Q5102 is vaporized, I need a part number. |

| QUESTION NO. P73102-10: GE VG4251 VCR, tape gets stuck in the rollers area when ejecting. This VCR accepts tape and will play or record just once, but as soon as you stop or pause, the tape tries to resume either play or record, the unit stops and turns off. |
| The idler needs to be replaced or, if you have a clutch system, the clutch is the most likely culpret. The idler takes up the slack when the machine down loads and when it goes for an back. |
| QUESTION NO. P60402-10: JVC HR-S3600U VCR has bad Q5105/2SK2043 but need the value of zener(?) D5301. It's a short glass diode. |
| D5301=Generic # RD15EB1,MTZJ15A=ECG5023A=14 volt zener,1/2 watt. |
| QUESTION NO. P52002-4: JVC HR-VP830U VCR plays, rewinds, f-forwards fine. When eject is pressed, the tape does not spool back into the cassette and therefore becomes tangled during the eject process. I have read the archives and I suspect your going to refer me to p 55-3 especially. I just wanted to double check about this model before replacing the mode switch and checking for dust/debris on the gears. |
| The tape not spooling back into the cassette is caused by a fault with the idler or clutch mechanisms. There are usually felt clutches associated with the idler gear and felt clutches on the take up and supply reels. On many VCR's the idler gear engages a direct drive gear for FF & FR, whereas for cue & review the idler gear engages a gear that drives the spool via a felt clutch, the same gear that is used for play. During play, however, the capstan/pinch roller pulls the tape through the mechanism with the take up reel pulling in the slack tape. Check for a slipping felt clutch mechanism. A little trick that works well, remove the offending spool and most spools can be popped apart, use some violin bow resin and carefully work the resin into the felt. You will find that the resin restores the lost grip of the felt with lasting results. Violin resin can also be dissolved into alcohol to provide a gloss finish over reworked solder joints. |
| Violin resin dissolved in alcohol is the same as rosin flux. |
| QUESTION NO. P51502-5: Hitachi VT3100 VCR, when tape reaches the end it begins to rewind automatically as it is supposed to but when the tape has completely rewound, it tries to rewind repeatedly by starting & stopping until the eject button is pressed. I replaced both tape end sensors along with the IR LED & cleaned the mode switch. |
| I found that the replacement (new) start of tape sensor (rewind end sensor) was also bad so replacing it again solved the problem. |
| QUESTION NO. P50702-3: Panasonic NV-850 VCR, customer complains of shutdown after shuffle of head drum. The power supply seems to be okay with no burnt or open resistors. |
| Usual problem is C1101 (3300uF16V) in the supply but others will also be suspect due to age of the unit. |
| QUESTION NO. P50302-5: Sony TLS 2000 VCR. This is a time lasp in a security system. It will load the tape, FF, Rew, Play, but when ejecting, it leaves a tape loop. I replaced the main drive belt, and cleaned the loading belt. There is no 1/2 load arm in this version. I have noticed at times, it will not fully load the tape (very erratic). |
| Clean/lube mode switch or replace it. |
| QUESTION NO. P319-1: Toshiba m-659 VCR, 90% of time tape loads but is immediately ejected. 10% of time tape loads and goes through tape path ( pinch roller is within 1/2 inch of tape) then it immediately ejects again. |
| Clean/lube mode switch. |
| QUESTION NO. P41702-6: JVC HR-A43U VCR. I am trying to find a replacement for (IC702)on circuit board & LA5613. |
| www.jvcservice.com |
| QUESTION NO. P40402-4: Zenith VRF 160 VCR stuck in a search mode that flips between reading AU or 5 on the channel indicator. Plays tapes slightly fast with four or five lines through the picture. No Remote. |
| Clean audio/control head and mode switch and check for tiny 10uf,25v radial electrolytic cap located on bottom of vcr on capstan board. |
| QUESTION NO. P40402-7: Sony SLV-790HF VCR will not load a tape, goes about 1/2 way into tray and then returns tape. |
| Replace FL # A-6751-496-H. |
| QUESTION NO. P40902-2: JVC BR-S611U VCR used in combustion research video. Unit sat idle for several months and worked fine prior to this new R&D start up. Now, FF & REW work fine as does tape counter. When PLAY mode is called or the shuttle is moved, the unit goes to stop and ejects tape. Warning error 32 is displayed. With cover off, the tape does snug against the video head but then unit retracts the tape and ejects the cassette. Capstan motors check OK. Cleaned unit but same results. |
| Clean and lube mode switch and if tape cage has a switch, clean/lube that one as well or replace them both. For part #'s www.jvcservice.com. |
| QUESTION NO. P31-3: RCA VR653 VCR HF Chassis Toshiba UL84X7 FCC IDG954255. I need the RCA, Toshiba & generic part # for ID02, a sound module similar to the Sony SBX1637/8 series. |
| Answering my own question is was actually ID01=RCA # 231130,225563,Toshiba # 70012328,Generic # HTS7332AX/B. |
| QUESTION NO. P314-7: National NV-G12 VCR was starting and then stopping, so replaced the idler tyre. Now the motor that drivers the idler refuses to start up except for every now and then when it works perfectly. |
| Check mode switch and open and clean it. |
